Within the Research Center of the European Institute of Design, bionic research activity has been present from the very beginning. As early as 1976 there was the Bionic Laboratory in the Department of Industrial Design, a research facility established with the aim of understanding the relationships between Basic Design and structural morphologies in nature through iconographic and functional connections and analog models. Later, from 1979 to 1982, research moved beyond the Basic Design dimension to the broader study of investigating possible analog relationships between natural patterns and artificial structures.
