Resumo:

O sistema nervoso periférico pode ser subdividido em autônomo, e os três subsistemas: o simpático, o parassimpático e o sistema entérico, com base na anatomia e funções. O conceito inicial de Sistema Nervoso Entérico surgiu nos estudos do Professor John Newport Langley, fi siologista e histologista inglês, membro da London Royal Society e da qual foi Vice-President. Foi ele que definiu sistema nervoso autônomo e as demais divisões simpático, parassimpático e o entérico. De fato, durante muito tempo o sistema nervoso entérico foi considerado como a porção pós-ganglionar da divisão parassimpática do sistema nervoso autônomo (SNA), atualmente, é reconhecido como uma divisão própria do sistema nervoso autônomo, juntamente com os sistemas nervosos simpático e parassimpático.
